View From My Window

“It is the time you have spent on your rose that makes her so important.” –Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

The view from my window is filtered through a sheer white floral burnout curtain which echoes the clumps of melting snow on the new tree buds. It’s said that we don’t have much of a spring in the Rockies- just winter and summer, continually duking it out. We’re not even supposed to plant until after Mother’s Day, for fear of frost. It makes me homesick for the sunny blue skies and abundant flowers of southern California, so I asked my boss to send me the view from her window instead.

Dea is the hardest worker I know, continually handling both the creative and technical aspects of the business. I’m constantly telling her that she needs to fashion herself a Harry Potter-style “time-turner” charm so she’ll have a few more hours in the day. She may have succeeded, if the lushly-planted flower garden she’s created outside her office is anything to go by.

At first glance, she doesn’t seem the type to get her hands in the dirt, with her slender pale fingers and the spill of long blonde curls that echoes the tumble of morning glories from an elegant stone pot. The big green eyes and syrupy Southern drawl make you think of Scarlett O’Hara sipping a mint julep- unless you’ve read the book and remember that Scarlett worked in the fields to save Tara. Her patio is covered in artfully arranged planters that are overflowing with lobelia, geraniums and impatiens. In acknowledgement of her labors, bees and butterflies are frequent visitors to this cheerful and relaxing retreat. It’s easy to see where she gets the inspiration for her romantic, feminine creations- even if I can’t figure out where she finds the time.

What’s outside of your window? Does it inspire you? If not- perhaps you should stop, and look at the roses.

Mom's Jewelry Box

My mother always said, “the good thing about children is that they eventually grow up. The bad thing is, they grow up.” I couldn’t wait to be a grown-up. I knew it meant I’d get to have a jewelry box just like Mom’s, with its flip-up latch and hinged shelves full of 1960s trinkets and our hospital bracelets. The red velour lining smelled of her perfume- if I close my eyes, I can still see it.

I keep my babies’ hospital bracelets in a jewelry box, too. They’re delicate and priceless to me, and as irreplaceable as the tiny baby feet I could once hold in my hand but are now borrowing my favorite boots. My children grew up, just like Mom warned me they would.

They’re not in my arms every day anymore, but they are never for a moment out of my heart. The tiny baby feet are now a sparkling accent on a sturdy charm bracelet that is as strong and beautiful as my girls. Their innocent faces smile back at me from the photo that will keep them my little ones forever. I should probably get an extra one, since no matter how big they get, children just don’t like to share. One day, many Mother’s Days from now, their daughters will be rummaging through my jewelry box and know that Grandma is always with them.

Earth Day Vegetable Garden Bracelet

It's Earth Day, love the Earth, it's all we have. As I young girl I was raised by my grandmother in north Georgia, we grew and canned our own food. As a teenager went to live with my dad in the San Fernando Valley, everyone in our neighborhood had swimming pools, and thanks to dad we had a cornfield and garden in our backyard. Pretty humiliating for a teenager, I didn't realize till years later Dad was teaching me lessons.
